ROWETTA

BELINDA HARRIS-REID

Around 40 million people are living with HIV throughout the world - and that number increases in every region every day. In the UK alone, more than 60,000 people are living with HIV and more than 7,000 more are diagnosed every year. HIV/AIDS is the deadliest epidemic of our time. More than 22 million people have already lost their lives and more than 42 million are currently living with HIV/AIDS. So that's the statistics/reality of numbers.... but it isn't all doom and gloom. My axiom in life is Positive Positive Positive.

Having HIV should not have any stigma attached to it and having Aids (which is a disease); it is not an assessment of intelligence or worth.

HIV (possibly leading to Aids) is an world wide epidemic that can leave destructive consequences, that can literally rip people's lives apart BUT the more we know about HIV, the more support we can give to those individuals that are courageously and positively living with HIV/AIDS, the more honest stories that are told and above all the dissipation of practical 'non-scare-mongery' information surrounding HIV, can bring about a clearer understanding of what living with HIV entails.

The cutting edge of real change does not, as everyone know, occur within the establishment body, but rather, one might say, on the fractal edge of the marginalised - I raise my glass to you!!!

HIVISION has asked me to be an advocate and ambassador of this forward thinking and much needed organisation. I am honoured to have been asked to promote and support this inspired resource.

GERRY GERSIMOS STERGIOPOULOS

HEIDI LISCOUS - AMBASSADOR FOR YOUNG PEOPLE

For me, HIV and AIDS started out as a series of frightening television commercials, that brought to life I had to educate myself and become aware of this issue that could potentially affect my life and those that are part of it. I started having lots of sex at a young age. I learnt quickly, but I was also very lucky. I knew 'it' was out there, but not something that affected me personally.

Then, somebody I knew, pointed out someone on the scene, who was HIV positive. It was weird. Then, somebody I knew a little told me they were HIV positive. It was unfamiliar. Then a close, friends, friend, died of an AIDS related illness. It was sad. Then I met someone new and they were upfront in telling me right away they were HIV positive. It was enlightening. Soon enough, I knew more and more people directly affected by HIV and it was upsetting. I had a boyfriend who was HIV positive. It was more upsetting. I had friends, good friends, best friends, also becoming affected and it became more upsetting, but also an issue I became not only more aware of, but deeply passionate about.

"It was without hesitation that I became ambassador for young people to HIVISION. I'm looking forward to my involvement, in raising the awareness of this issue and to the HIVISION profile. HIV continues to and will affect everybody to some degree, as it has me personally and the more awareness and education we have, the brighter our future will be."
